satyam – ?!

I felt that my purse was forcibly opened to give alms, but since the recipient was never ever going to be a beggar, I felt that my work was being taxed to give the greedy a better lunch. I felt that I was robbed not by Robin Hood to pay to the poor but by scheming scoundrels to pay slipshod crooks.
The Government of India has decided (or is deciding) to give 2000 crores to bail out satyam! Am I supposed to feel sorry or angry, since I don’t feel happy? When the USA started bailing out fraudulent or inefficient organizations, I was just curious, not concerned. I was wondering why fools are given grace marks to pass exams, but then, I do not understand economics or politics. I was just a news-consumer with the inherent apathy of the breed. But this ‘indian’ news struck a chord. I blinked. I tried to wake up.
After a few hours of ingesting the news I could not digest my emotional reaction to it. I felt I was selfish. When my thinking should have been globalised I was thinking in a very indianised strait jacket! Shameful? Perhaps! But then, how can I be as much worried about the world as I am about my own country? Surely I do not belong to the class of Manmohan Singh and P Chidambaram. They are globalised, industrialized, intelligent and with foresight much beyond my corrective lens’ distant vision. They know what they are doing. They know what to do and when. They may even know how. After all, I was dreaming (like millions of idiots) that they are going to make this country and consequently my life better. I was silent when many things happened. I was just thinking that every mess was just a precursor to prosperity. After all, I am just a middle-class Indian with a middle-class dream. Now when they plan to take 2000 crores of my money – (in this country when I keep believing that the guy I voted for rules and regulates the country, I am also deluded that the government is using my money constructively) I feel uneasy. My philistine conscience tries to tear the shroud of indifference. My selfishness takes over my pseudo-liberalized-currently-vogue attitude that India’s image is more important than squandering of hard earned pittance.
Ok. So, a much-hyped company is in shambles. 50,000 guys are unsure of their future. If the company crashes many homes would weep, but more importantly the image of Indian business would fall in the eyes of the world. We (again it is my delusion to use the collective pronoun), would not be able to get the world to transact business with us. Lots and lots and lots of such ‘dire’ consequences are portrayed. So it is up to all of us to stand united and save the company. Sounds good. Sounds even sensible. But if sounds are sensible enough why do we have words?
In a bizarre thought process that wondered about what went wrong and who was responsible, I briefly speculated whether it was all because of Rajiv who wanted computers all over the country or his grandfather who believed that industrialization and modernization were the routes to prosperity. The silly thought vanished like mist in the face of my patriotic sun. My leaders, (I believed, wanted to believe, and hypnotized myself to believe) are doing whatever is best for the country. So when Manmohan Singh decides that my tax (not even worth calculating in percentile against the 2000 crores) should be spent on reviving a fraudulent organization, I accept. Even when you accept defeat or victory, happiness or sorrow, you can’t help wondering- in other words thinking. Thought and emotion are never the same despite the constant flirting between the two.
So, stopping my emotions from surfacing out of the gutters of my mind, I turn to the pseudo-sanitation of my thoughts to rationalize and deny facts. I wish to forget the misuse of my non-existent (figuratively and literally) paisa.
50,000 persons and perhaps 150,000 would suffer. This government wakes up to the fact and acts swiftly, whereas 182,936 persons were dying a slow steady and sure death in the past 10 years. if i know it, i presume MY government knows it too!
They died.

These guys are just going to suffer.

So what? Perhaps in the liberalized, globalized, modernized thought process of the pseudo-socialism that we embrace, living is worse than dying.
And, how long and how many are going to suffer? The inefficient would lose money and face in the community. The efficient would get other employment offers. They may not buy a BMW but instead get just a Maruti 800. Their pub and bar expenses would have to be cut. Italian shoes would have to be replaced with Indian ones. Some may settle for lesser jobs for just some more time!

Are they going to die? of course they should not, but will they face death when they can’t even face defeat? There may be some idiots who commit suicide among the thousands who are going to get depressed. But their depression would be a consequence of a loss of desires but not needs, unlike the farmers who could not even feed their infants. They still would have stocks to sell, houses to live, food to even waste and throw. It will be just a blow that perhaps devastates the dream castles that they have(having been sold with cunningness ) bought with greed. But are they going to stop living?
Read this.“The suicides of thousands of farmers around the country tell poignant and revealing tales of our country, and the desperation that marks the lives of so many millions. Disastrous policies, woeful access to affordable credit, greedy and corrupt middlemen, and indifferent administrations are among the factors that have pushed farmers to their breaking point.-
Suicides by farmers of Maharashtra crossed the 4000 mark in 2007, for the third time in four years, according to the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). As many as 4238 farmers of the State took their lives that year, the latest for which data are available, accounting for a fourth of 16,632 farmer suicides in the country. The national total represents a slight fall, from 17,060 in 2006, but the broad trends of ‘the past decade seem unshaken. Farmer suicides in the country since 1997 now
(2008) total 1,82,936. http://www.indiatogether.org/agriculture”

Does this mean anything?

Those farmers WERE NEVER BAILED OUT. They just put votes, did not pay taxes. The sugarcane farmer did not come forward to fight for the cotton farmer. They had things to do. things which meant life that met needs not greed. Since they meant nothing in the globalized economic equations, they were allowed to rue, rot and die- unlike in the present scenario.

Sister/brother software companies have pledged that they will not poach the employees of the falling organization. Without going into the realistic question of “for how long”, it just sends a simple message. Birds of a feather flock together! Would it be wrong on my part to wonder whether the government’s feathers and satyam’s feathers belong to the same plume?
If frauds win always, should we become frauds to survive?

i care what the government does even if  the government  does not  care what i (an ordinary inconsequential voter) think. i wish we talk about it even if, as usual, we do not think about it.

TWO DAYS AFTER THE POST WAS WRITTEN, THIS MORNING  (16/01/09)THE NEWS WAS THAT THE GOVERNMENT WAS NOT GOING TO CONSIDER GIVING ANY MONEY FOR SATYAM (certainly not because of my post!). but in no way does this absolve the government for sitting quietly and pondering on what to do with dying farmers, when it acted swiftly to save possible-job-lossers amongst whom, there were quite some who were very disturbed about their plummeting matrimonial-market-value!

dear mannar- here is the gist of what you wanted
      Lousy lust for limelight (title)
A lady, claimed without shame or guilt that she is the re-incarnation of the media created Ms.Akbar!-shameless after the celluloid dream weaved by aiswarya rai, and so anti-socially devoid of guilt about performing for (I hope unbelieving) cameras. The anchor who presents himself as a conscientious and socially concerned person, added the right amount of spice with his intonation and the apparent-disbelief-aimed– at –creating-the just right amount of curious wonder!
I admit with shame and guilt that I watched the episode. This, I felt in shameful glee, was a juicy post to gather viewers and comments. I have not thought of commercializing my blog yet, but I constantly flirt with that revenue-oriented-fad. I have already written on the spirits. I have mentioned in the passing about frauds masquerading as gurus. This takes the cake.
I wish I could treat the lady.
I wish I could teach the public.
I wish I could slap the cheap media mongrels who await my flesh.

  10. Anand Says:

I completely agree with DR and impressed with his way of thinking. So many farmers have died in this country and nothing was talked about like how Satyam is talked on. I think it should be left on its own to get bailed out. Only a greedy man can do such a think to a company who has built it so big. Also, I would want to bring this point that in the US, Bernard Madoff, the former Nasdaq chairman who was charged on with massive fraud (50 billion), was brought to court soon and things are happening fast to find out what went wrong and find out how much money he has eated and which can brought out from hidding to bail some of the people who where affected by him. So, I wish the Indian law makers and thinkers who talk big and very slow in doing what they have to do – should bring these kind of sitution to rest on a ‘ASAP’ manner. MAN – we are lossing our image abroad. I was there in times square and I could see a ticker on NASDAQ bad about SATYAM and I was very much sad to see that. People around me saw me and said – way to go buddy. I hate to see such news on the world forum. We are there for all kinds of issues poverty, slow development , corruption etc. Software industry was one respected one for India – NOW THAT IS GONE.

  11. GarGi Dixit Says:

it is the Mixed Fraud plan of Mixed economy regulated corporatism.

Although I do not agree with DR.

See, the simple thing is Farmers in Vidharbha, Tilangana, kerala, MP are dying because of GOVERNMENT interventionism, and further intervention by government won’t help anybody but will curse the situation more.
I wrote about it here please have a look How Government Kills Poor Farmers: GM Genocide

About <Satyam Scandal the scandal is starting now.
The situation must be judged and solved as per Free Market System. But alas! India won’t go for free market capitalism any time in near future. Why India? Even america didn’t opted for free market solutions for such failures and scams and opted ofr bailouts, looting the tax-payers money.

  12. frednixon Says:

    Dear Dr.Rudhran,

The most idiotic post I have ever read in my life. I hope you are an educated man (Your post makes me think otherwise). If so, answer this simple question. You have a friend who says that he saw a dying man and he did not help. You will be definitely angry on him. After 2 days when you both are walking out you see another man who is also dying. The only difference is that the earlier one was poor and this one is rich.

So what will you do? Tell your friend not to help this guy as he did not help the poor guy? You will leave this guy to die and be happy and feel that this is justice.

If you feel like that, you better get yourself to a psychiatrist.

These are 2 different issues. Should be handled separately.

I agree that Ramalinga Raju is fraud. But what did the 50000 employees did? Are they fraud too? You think the Govt. is helping frauds? If so, you are the most stupid person I have ever known.

Tax Payers: Who are they? How many normal folks pay their taxes properly? Do you pay taxes truly? If no then shut up. If yes then so do those employees.

  13. frednixon Says:

    One more clarification:

IT People/ Software Engineers are not that rich like you all think. They are also sons and daughters of teachers, govt. employees, etc. They all come from middle class families. Do you think only Tata and Birla family work in IT? Get out of your A/C room and come see outside world Dr.Rudhran.

Just because you have a blog you cannot write anything!

//Perhaps in the liberalized, globalized, modernized thought process of the pseudo-socialism that we embrace, living is worse than dying.

Since they meant nothing in the globalized economic equations, they were allowed to rue, rot and die- unlike in the present scenario.//

I heard some time back from a comrade that one bank employee of Maharashatra, an ordinary man traces every family of the deceased farmer who took the extreme step and donates Rs.500/-. A simple amount…his affordable amount but with a strong message. He is doing what he is able to do. here is one more person, but an extraordinary person, Mr. M.S. Swaminathan who is also doing what he is able to do, what he was and is best in doing… still killing the agriculture from the bottom through his pointless and at times criminal verbose and complicity with GM companies…

We must also do what we can do.
    I mean it.
    I am doing it.

//their depression would be a consequence of a loss of desires but not needs, unlike the farmers who could not even feed their infants.//

Arundhati Roy puts their desires in this way in her Interview.
“What we’re witnessing is the most successful secessionist struggle ever waged in independent India — the secession of the middle and upper classes from the rest of the country. It’s a vertical secession, not a lateral one. They’re fighting for the right to merge with the world’s elite somewhere up there in the stratosphere.?”

Now with the recent Sathyam Fiasco and WB snubbing Sathyam, Wipro and Megasoft, the dreams and hopes of the globalised indians is under shambles. when the farmers of this country were silently cosuming poisons, these were the dudes and gals who were dancing with cheerleaders in T20,

P.Sainath notes how the Bailouts are working in US and the culpability of the top heads.
“It is only now that the compensation for CEOs and top executives are a matter of — limited — debate. As for the hundreds of billions of dollars given to the banks in the bailout – there is no evidence of this money being used to ease the credit and mortgage crises at the level of the public. Not even a requirement that they make details of their use of the money public – though it is public money they make use of.”

Now a question rises.NASSCOM and other corporate entities who have always opposed the interference of State are acting now as the per the directions of the corporate affairs minister. strange indeed.

The quixotic suggestion made by Rajashekar Reddy that top heads of Infosys, Wipro and TCS should jointly take responsibility of Sathyam is not that impractical. Why can’t NASSCOM or other proud member of India Inc., take the responsibility for the fiasco who was otherwise always ready for claiming all the credentials of the IT market and industry?

  19. me1084 Says:

    @frednixon

But Before that can u pls enlighten us u’r point sir? morever u have not asked any question. u have just remarked that even many of the IT belong to middle class. who denies that? even bailing out Sathyam doesn’t mean bailing out the employees of Sathyam. Who is bailing out the middle class IT people getting thrown out to streets from various concerns pointing the finger at global recession. Govt is not worried about the employees but about the image of India Inc.,

  20. R.A.Israel Says:

    Dear Mr.Frednixon,
First of all I want to appreciate your sympathy for the 50000 IT professionals of Satyam, because afterall they are also are our fellow citizens and tax payers.I read the article of Dr.Rudhran and various comments. You have asked Dr.Rudhran to shut up and Akshaya has asked you to shut up.Instead of shutting up,why cant we open the issue and analyze.
Your first question is about the reaction for death of poor man and later rich man.You are absolutely right that being a humanbeing whether poor or rich, human is human and no one one should die.If there is is tsunami or flood or earthquake, then if Dr.Rudhran or Government intends to rescue only poor people and leave the rich to die because their only fault is that they are rich, then your reaction would have been absolutely right and Dr.Rudhran should shut up.But if you read Dr.Rudhran’s article, what he intends to say is poor farmers are dieing without anyone to bail them out from their poverty whereas government is thinking of bailing out rich software IT professionals. If government do not bail out poor farmers they will die because of poverty(many have died already) whereas rich IT professionals(according to you middle class) will not die. They may become middle class if they are rich and they will become lower middle class if they are middle class now if the government does not bail out SATYAM.But they are professionals(unlike the poor farmers who depend on monsoon and subsidies) and they wont commit suicide. They will get jobs in a different software company which may not be high profile like satyam and their salary will also not be high. But definitely they wont die out of hunger. This is what Dr.Rudhran intends to say.So government should think of bailing out poor farmers rather than Satyam IT professionals.
Regarding your second question, who are the tax payers and whether Dr.Rudhran pays tax.If you look into the Indian Budget, inavariably every year indirect taxes are far higher than direct taxes.Do not have the misconception that only PAN card holders pay tax.Every indian citizen pays tax whether he is rich or poor. When a poor farmer or barber or rickshaw puller buys rice or wheat or oil or pencil for is children,he pays tax indirectly to government. If you analyze the budgets of every year since independence,Indirect taxes are far higher than direct taxes. So Dr.Rudhran also pays tax directly or indirectly.Every indian has the right to question about the expenditure by Government because it is tax payers money. So not only Dr.Rudhran, even a rickshaw puller can question the Government, because it is his money that the Government is spending.
Anyhow Mr.Frednixon, once again I want to appreciate your concern for Satyam IT professionals because they are also are our fellow citizens. But dont worry, they wont die out of hunger because they are professionals and will find jobs in some other company, maybe with less salary.

    • rudhran Says:

thanks to israel, me1084 and ashaya.
frednixon, i wonder what to reply. some of my remarks have apparently angered you! i wonder which- whether my comment that the capable will get other jobs and the incapable will lose jobs, or whether the undeserving dreams of some would crash, or whether my comment that some would lose out on their dowry value.
i did not reply because i had not come over to the net for the past few days. if you are seeing aura and halo around people it just means your vision is faulty.

  21. frednixon Says:

    Dear R.A.Israel,

Thank you for your elaborate explanation. My anger is over the few remarks of Dr.Rudhran. This article seems to express his hatred over IT people and not his concern over the farmers. Read his article line by line. He has a wrong impression about IT folks.

And thank you one and all for your replies. But the author himself is nowhere to be found to defend his own aura. What a pity !

  25. hidha Says:

    Dear Doctor
I totally agree with your views and appreciate your concern for the farmers, eventhough I too work in Satyam.

It’s been rightly pointed out in your article, that if government fails to bail out Satyam, certainly it will not make the employees to fight for food, shelter and clothing. Rather most of us are really worried about the loans(housing, car) etc., which certainly does not fall under the day-to-day necessities for human survival.

What everyone fails to realise is the good old tamil proverb “Viralukkaeththa Veekkam”.
